Don’t take thieves along on your holiday shopping spree!

November 14, 2011

With Christmas less than two months away, many of us are gearing up for our holiday shopping spree. Here are some important tips to make sure you are not inadvertently inviting thieves to come along.

How not to take thieves along on your shopping spree:

  • While holiday shopping, present an alert appearence. Be aware of what’s going on around you; scan the area from time to time. Avoid concentrating so hard on your shopping that you fail to keep track of your surroundings.
  • Wear conservative, comfortable clothing.
  • Grip carried items firmly and avoid leaving them unattended.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with credit cards whenever possible.
  • Carry minimal valuables, wear minimal jewellery.
  • Deter pickpockets and purse-snatchers. Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.

Don’t turn your car into a big gift-box for thieves!

Are you inviting thieves to help themselves to Free Stuff?

Let’s see what’s left inside:

  • Your laptop?
  • MP3 Player?
  • Your favourite CD’s?
  • Speakers?
  • Your Purse?
  • Credit Cards?
  • Designer Sunglasses?

Limit what you leave in your car. Remove or secure what you can. LOCK IT! ALARM IT!

Park in a well-lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows & sunroof.

Plan your shopping spree so that you don’t load your trunk until you are ready to drive to the next destination. Only load your trunk when you leave a location – never open a trunk, fill it with valuables, close it, and then just walk away to do more shopping.

When returning to your vehicle, carry your keys in your hand and be ready to unlock the door and enter as quickly as possible. As you approach your car, scan the area, glance underneath the vehicle and take a quick look inside before entering.

The Edmonton Police Service and the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) are teaming up to reinforce the message to holiday shoppers that they can prevent theft from vehicles.

Stay safe this holiday season!
