Tips For Ringing In The New Year Safely

December 5, 2011

New Year’s Eve is a night to have fun and celebrate the incoming year. Using some common sense will ensure that you are safe and sound when the clock strikes midnight, ringing in the year 2012.

Ring in the New Year Safely with these 7 Safety Tips:

Be Aware!

If you are driving, be aware of your surroundings. New Year’s Eve is notorious for drunk driving. Stay alert behind the wheel and drive defensively!

Don’t Drink & Drive!

If you drink, don’t drive. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before the celebration begins. Take a taxi or use public transportation.

Take Away the Keys!

If you suspect someone is too impaired to drive, take away the keys. The consequences from drinking and driving are real. There is not just the risk of a loved one or complete stranger getting killed, the financial costs and trauma associated with a crash can be significant.

Keep Your Pets Safe!

If you are using fireworks, anything with loud noises, or fire, make sure to keep your pets at a safe distance. All that noise can be traumatizing for your pet.

Be A Responsible Host!

Plan ahead by hiring a designated driver. Contact a local cab company to provide rides home for your guests. Serve non-alcoholic beverages as an option for your guests. Stop serving alcohol several hours before the party ends. Provide the option to stay overnight after the party.

Test Your Smoke Alarms!

Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly, especially if you are hosting a New Year’s Eve party. Change the batteries a few days before your party to ensure that your smoke detectors are uptodate.

Do Not Re-light Fireworks!

If you are planning to let off fireworks, use proper safety precautions. Only let off fireworks in an open field away from homes and power lines. Have a fire extinguisher nearby. Do not re-light fireworks that have failed to go off.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Safe 2012!
