The Secret To Stopping Break-ins

February 19, 2012

In recent years commercial properties have increasingly become a prime target for burglaries, and more often than not, these burglaries could have been prevented. Business owners need to be more aware of security risks and take some important steps to stop these break-ins from happening. Simply hoping “It won’t happen to me” does not cut it!

Did you know

  • A burglary occurs every 90 seconds in Canada.
  • Homes and businesses without any visible security signage are much more likely to be targeted by burglars.
  • There is a very good chance for a property to get hit a second time after the first break-in has occured.
  • Most break-ins are quick and easy opportunities, often where the burglar spotted an open window or door and valuables within easy reach.
  • Most victims are affected emotionally and psychologically and are unsettled for weeks afterward. Shock, fear, and the feeling of being personally violated is often more disturbing than the physical loss.

The not so secret steps to stopping break-ins for businesses

  1. Never share sensitive security information with strangers. Do not “hide” sticky notes with codes and passwords anywhere. Burglars most often know where to look for them.
  2. Be alert. Be aware of who is coming in and out of your business at all times.
  3. Make sure your premises are well lit, both inside and outside. Keep the view of your surveillance cameras from being blocked by anything.
  4. Be aware of loiterers and any suspicious behaviour.
  5. Try to welcome every customer with eye contact and discourage a would-be robber with friendliness.
  6. Do not play the “hero”! If you feel threatened, call 911.
  7. If you are caught up in a hold-up, play it safe. Never put your life at risk for money.
  8. Never keep large amounts of cash in your till.
  9. Display signs informing potential burglars that “no cash left on site overnight”.
  10. Have a security system installed and use it! Adveritise your security system with plenty of signage and a current alarm permit sticker.

If you don’t have a security system or don’t have it monitored, call me for a free, no-obligation consultation. You will be glad you did!
